Usable Clients: (New Client!) The SUDC Foundation
We are honored to announce our new client, The SUDC Foundation or The Sudden Unexplained Death In Childhood (SUDC) Foundation (formerly The SUDC Foundation created in September 2001) is tasked with providing a centralized resource for information, support and advocacy. It serves families and professionals affected by the tragedy of SUDC, and promotes awareness of SUDC in communities.
Sudden Unexplained Death in Childhood (SUDC) is… the sudden and unexpected death of a child over the age of twelve months, which remains unexplained after a thorough case investigation is conducted. This must include: examination of the death scene, performance of a complete autopsy, and a review of the child and family’s medical history. SUDC is a diagnosis of exclusion – given when all known and possible causes of death have been ruled out.
In 2014, the SUDC Foundation lobbied for the legislation of The Sudden Unexpected Death Data Enhancement and Awareness Act (S.2746/H.R.669). Through landmark advocacy, the bill was signed into law by President Obama in 2014. The act amends the Public Health Service Act to help enhance awareness about unexpected sudden death in early life. The legislation provides for consistent data collection related to stillbirths and sudden, unexpected deaths in both infants and children. By better understanding the causes of unexpected sudden death, we can do more to improve the health of all infants and children.
